Name: Varric Tethras
Door: Right: Sorrow is greater than pain.

Canon: Dragon Age series
Canon Point: Post-Trespasser

Age: 43ish
Appearance: A one, and a two, and a three
History: Varric on the Wiki

Personality:
- / + Guarded: Varric Tethras keeps everything close to his chest. His secrets have secrets. Many things that others might display like an open book (some of them only because Varric wrote the book), such as personal history, loves and losses, take years to dig out of him. Under duress. Bianca comes to mind. Both the crossbow and the dwarf bearing the name. It doesn't stop him from loving fiercely, from being committed to causes, to friends, to relationships and responsibilities, but it does mean that his motives are often suspect to those that haven't spent a decade at his side. And that's most people.

In this same vein, Varric can sometimes appear dishonest while he attempts to spin the right story to change the subject. He aims for lies of omission as often as possible, but when it comes to the safety of his friends, and/or he just doesn't trust the person prying, he will lie, as is the case of the Story of the Champion he spins for Cassandra, culminating in him telling her he doesn't know where Hawke is. Which in itself was not a lie, exactly, so much as he left out that he could find Hawke if necessary. Half-truths and guards and tall tales to distract from all the corners of his life he'd like to remain hidden and buried.

- / + Meddlesome: Varric is absolutely known to poke his nose into places it was neither invited nor welcome. He has the best intentions, generally the Greater Good, though he would never claim to be particularly pragmatic, but his projected selfishness is largely a front, another layer of armor in his guard. If a friend is in trouble, Varric buys them relief, in the form of paying off whoever is causing the problems, if he can. From paying for repairs to noble families when a friend likes to pick flowers in their gardens to the thugs who would cause problems for a friend squatting in a former master's house, Varric is not asked to do these things, but he keeps tabs on his friends whether they want him to or not, and does his best to help. He would prefer to do this from behind the scenes, the author able to control the story, but he's your best man to back you up with some ranged support when you need it, too.

+ Gregarious: Varric is charming, friendly, and a wordsmith. From telling tales to writing them to making friends with those most determined to have no friends at all, Varric has the gift of gab. In tense situations he can diffuse them easily with compassion, logic, and even threats thinly veiled in sarcasm. Whenever called upon to help out in a situation, he will always try to talk their way out of it first. Well, almost. Sometimes someone straight up gets a crossbow bolt to the face because they were so clearly about to become an enemy. But most of the time, yeah, he'd rather talk it out. He just knows a lost cause when he sees one.

While this is more often than not a positive, it has been seen to be grating on those who are much more straight-forward or reserved.

- / + Controlling: All this to say, Varric likes to be in control. Not from the front lines, not calling the shots, but in his own life, in his circle he's cultivated carefully with friends and associates and enemies alike. The microcosm of running his family's place in the Merchant's Guild combined with his place at the side of the Champion of Kirkwall and later the Inquisitor, and more recently, well. Viscount of Kirkwall. He didn't get there by being bad at micromanaging. He likes things to run smoothly, even knowing full well they rarely will, and always does his damnedest to see that things at least have the option to.

All in all, Varric is a good dude. His guardedness exists to keep himself safe, and those he loves safe. His dishonesty is most often used to that same end. He meddles in his friends' lives because he loves them and wants to help, to fix things, to make things better, and never asks for anything in turn for his unsolicited assistance. He's a slick charmer and only an asshole to those who start it, and the most loyal friend you could ask for.

And he's gonna hate Duplicity a lot.

Powers and Abilities:
Wordsmith: While not anything magical, obviously, Varric has a gift for words. He's a famous published author in addition for a knack for talking his way into and out of just about anything.
Archery: He's a master archer, his preferred weapon is his trusty Bianca, a truly one-of-a-kind crossbow he wields with such skill he's usually banned from any competition. He's also capable of using any other bow, but why would he?
Rogue: Beyond his general character thereof, Varric is a skilled lock-picker, capable of stealth (seeming invisible by taking advantage of shadows and distractions) for short periods of time, and skilled in traps and poisons.
Artificer: A subset of his Rogue skills, Varric has a knack for the fiddlier traps, essentially.

Inventory: 1. Bianca
2. A set of lockpicks
3. A copy of the Tale of the Champion (the book he wrote about Hawke's life, especially regarding his years in Kirkwall.)

Samples: TDM threads! and I can write up something else, if needed ♥
